About...

The Streilein Foundation for Ocular Immunology is named after J. Wayne Streilein, M.D. Often referred to as the "Father of Modern Ocular Immunology", he was the President and Director of Research at the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston, and the Charles L. Schepens Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. Dr Streilein was a pioneer in ocular immunology and one of the most influential scientists in this field in the 20th century. The Foundation grew from the idea of a Center for Immunology and Inflammation conceived by Dr. Streilein prior to his death.
With his untimely passing on March 15, 2004 the idea of a center evolved into the Streilein Foundation for Ocular Immunology. The corpus of the Foundation was initially derived from a memorial fund created in his honor. Since 2004 these monies were sequestered and reserved for future use to support the Foundation's primary mission - the education of tomorrow's ocular immunologists.
In 2005 the Board of Directors had their first meeting during ARVO and planned the future of the Foundation. In 2008 Laura Streilein Berend was asked to join the Board. The first educational activity of the Streilein Foundation was the establishment of a travel grant for pre- and post-doctoral trainees to attend the 2009 ARVO meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
In April of 2008, the Streilein Foundation became a full fledged public charity in the state of Massachusetts allowing us to raise monies to support our goals and missio
n. In March 2009, the Foundation funded the first Streilein Foundation ARVO Travel Grant to Mario Perez Rueda, M.D. In 2010 the Foundation is expanding the Travel Grant program to include both domestic and international awards. It is currently in the process of partnering with professional organizations and building a stable core organization. Future activities of the Foundation will be announced on its web site and will include grants and fellowships in immunology.
